Bethlehem, shepherds and flocks in foreground
A picture of a lonely shepherd walking in Judean hills with Bethlehem in the background is somewhat a picture of David, shepherding his father’s flock outside of Bethlehem. God raised David in solitude, while he was with the sheep, where he could meditate on God’s glory in His creation, and when Samuel arrived to anoint David, he was ready for a job of a king after God’s heart. David was a prototype of Jesus, he was a shepherd from Bethlehem who became a king, while Jesus was also born in Bethlehem and called himself a shepherd (John 10:14), and will still sit on the throne of David, as the King with a kingdom that lasts forever (2 Sam 7:12-13).
